Material ID on fulfordstudio.com. It continues from 1.1.0, the last version sold elsewhere, with the same features and files.
Changed
- A Blender 4.2+ extension only: install the zip from Edit ▸ Preferences ▸ Get Extensions ▸ Install from Disk, or drag it onto Blender. If you had an earlier version, remove it first.
- Blender asks once for permission to write files, for the ID pass image and the Photoshop swatches.
Fixed
- The extension now passes Blender's own validation. The tagline was longer than Blender allows, which stopped earlier zips from being accepted as extensions.
The pass is now a checkbox, and the compositor is left alone.
Changed
- Material ID sits in Properties ▸ View Layer ▸ Passes, next to Cryptomatte and the Shader AOVs, backed by
ViewLayer.matid_use_pass. Ticking it is the whole setup. - The palette keeps itself in step with the scene: before every render, after a file load, and as you work when the set of materials changes. All of it gated on a fingerprint of everything the pass depends on, so it is near-free and cannot loop — the add-on's own writes never change the fingerprint.
- Nothing is written to the compositor any more. Render ID Pass creates the File Output node it needs, renders, then removes it, restoring
use_nodesand deleting a node group it had to create. The graph is byte-identical before and after. - Add File Output Node is now an explicit opt-in, for writing the pass on every normal render.
- Palette and export panels are collapsed by default; export lives under Material ID Export.
Fixed
- Handlers are
@persistent. Without it Blender drops them on the first file load, and the pass keeps its checkbox ticked while silently no longer tracking the scene.
Removed
- The Build Material ID Pass operator. The checkbox replaces it; Refresh Palette remains for forcing a rebuild.
- The All View Layers setting, replaced by the per-view-layer checkbox. The panel now lists other view layers using the pass.
Colour assignment is unchanged — palettes from 1.0.x reproduce identically.

Fixed
- Materials with no node tree are switched over to nodes and tagged, instead of being skipped. Pre-5.0 Blender hands back node-less materials from the API, so on 4.2 this meant a material could get no ID colour at all. The operator reports how many were changed, since it does edit the material.
- Excluded materials are left completely untouched — not even switched to nodes.
Changed
- CI installs Blender directly rather than through
setup-blender, which was building download URLs that 404'd. Registration is now verified on 4.2.0 and 5.2.0.
